Comparison of tree stem diameter variations in beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in Sorø Denmark and in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Hyytiälä, Finland

چکیده
Tree stem diameter variations were measured simultaneously in beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in Sorø, Denmark and in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Hyytiälä, Finland. The variations were detected at two heights on the xylem and the whole stem on both trees. The evapo-transpiration of the forests was measured by eddy-covariance method. The pattern of evapo-transpiration was refl ected on the diameter variations in both cases. However, the pattern was clearer in Scots pine than in beech. The amplitude of the variation in beech was 0.02 mm in the case of xylem and 0.03 mm in the case of whole stem measurements. In Scots pine the amplitude of xylem diameter variation was 0.05–0.09 mm depending on the measurement height on the xylem and 0.15 mm on the whole stem. The difference in the elasticity of the wood of the two species was refl ected in the amplitudes of the variations. The environmental conditions during the measurement period and the measurement methods were similar at both sites, which made the simple comparison possible.

متن کاملLiving on the Edge: Contrasted Wood-Formation Dynamics in Fagus sylvatica and Pinus sylvestris under Mediterranean Conditions
Wood formation in European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) was intra-annually monitored to examine plastic responses of the xylem phenology according to altitude in one of the southernmost areas of their distribution range, i.e., in the Moncayo Natural Park, Spain. The monitoring was done from 2011 to 2013 at 1180 and 1580 m a.s.l., corresponding to the lower and...
متن کاملEffects of Thermomechanical Densification and Heat Treatment on Density and Brinell Hardness of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Eastern Beech (Fagus orientalis L.)
The effects of thermomechanical densification (TMD) and heat treatment on density and Brinell hardness of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Eastern beech (Fagus orientalis L.) woods were investigated. Samples were densified using a specially designed hydraulic press with target compression ratios of 20 and 40%, and at 110 °C and 150 °C. Then, the heat treatment was applied to the samples at ...
متن کاملComparing the intra-annual wood formation of three European species (Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris) as related to leaf phenology and non-structural carbohydrate dynamics.
Monitoring cambial phenology and intra-annual growth dynamics is a useful approach for characterizing the tree growth response to climate change. However, there have been few reports concerning intra-annual wood formation in lowland temperate forests with high time resolution, especially for the comparison between deciduous and coniferous species. The main objective of this study was to determi...
متن کاملForestry and water budget of the lowlands in northeast Germany – consequences for the choice of tree species and for forest management
The lowlands in northeast Germany are among the driest and at the same time the most densely wooded regions in Germany. Low annual precipitation between 500 and 600 mm and the light sandy soils with their low water storage capacity and high porosity lead to limited water availability. Therefore the hydrological functions of forests play an important role in the fields of regional water budget, ...
